Knowledge to Ponder: Matthew 7: 1-12
If there’s one thing that truly gets under my skin, it’s a busybody gossiper.
Now, I know that might sound harsh, but I’m just being honest. There’s something about people sitting around all day—on the phone, scrolling through social media—just spreading stories, stirring the pot, and passing judgment that bothers me to my core.
Why? Because:
- There are so many better, more meaningful things they could be doing—things that actually build people up instead of tearing them down.
- Most of the time, they don’t even know the full story! They’re talking about things they have no proof of—just hearsay.
And that’s what really stings. Because at the heart of it, gossip isn’t just small talk—it’s unkind and judgmental.
But here’s something to think about: What if, instead of gossiping, we actually prayed for the person we’re talking about?
Mind Your Own Front Door
My mom used to say, “Sweep in front of your own front door.”
And for those of you who don’t speak fluent Southern Mama, that simply means: Mind your own business.
The truth is, we all go through highs and lows. Everyone will experience difficulties at some point in life. And if you think you’re the exception, as my mama would also say, “Just keep on living.”
One day, life will hit your doorstep. And then what?
What if you became the topic of the latest gossip? What if someone spread rumors about your struggles without knowing the full truth?
Wouldn’t you rather have kindness, grace, and understanding instead? Jesus expresses that in our verses to ponder today: Matthew 7: 1-12
Breaking the Gossip Habit
The good news is—it’s never too late to change.
We may not be able to change others, but we can definitely change ourselves. And the Bible actually warns against gossip at least 49 times. That’s not a coincidence. That’s a warning.
If we truly want to be the light in this world, we have to make sure our words reflect love, not judgment.
Here are a few ways to shift away from gossip and into a life filled with grace, joy, and purpose:
✅ Sow Mercy, Kindness, and Love – Replace judgment and criticism with encouragement.
✅ Pray Instead of Gossiping – When you feel the urge to discuss someone’s situation, pause and say a prayer for them instead.
✅ Lead by Example – Your character, actions, and words should reflect the goodness of God.
✅ Exercise Self-Control – Instead of spreading gossip, shift your focus to spreading the Gospel.
✅ Adopt an Attitude of Gratitude – When you focus on what you’re thankful for, you’ll have less time and energy to focus on others’ shortcomings.
Humility Is the Key
At the end of the day, humble people don’t gossip.
Their love for God and their commitment to kindness simply won’t allow it.
So let’s strive to be those people—the ones who choose love over judgment, grace over gossip, and light over darkness.
Because when we do? We don’t just change our conversations—we change our lives.
Confirmation Statement: Humility is the order of the day, no room for pride or snobbery. I am better than anyone else.
Prayer: Lord, I don’t want to be a gossip. I truly understand that gossiping does not help anyone or anything and serves no true purpose except hurt and deception. God help me so that my mind and heart will lose the desire to spend time gossiping and focus more on seeking ways to put my big heart out to the world to provide more love and kindness everywhere I go. Help me to remain humble and in gratitude for all of your blessings. Help me to have compassion for people in my community and have a greater desire to serve.
Now, let’s get this party started. Great worship song – it allows you to pour your heart out to the Lord. Love it! Make Me Over – Tonex
