Proverbs 3:21–35
I once knew a young woman who had so much going for her—she was smart, gifted, and beautiful. But the way she carried herself often rubbed people the wrong way. Her words could come across sharp, even offensive.
One day, she asked me for honest feedback. I gently shared what I’d noticed. At first, she was a little defensive, but I reminded her that she had invited the truth, not flattery. Slowly, she admitted that she wanted to come across as confident—but her confidence often showed up more like a wall than a gift.
Here’s the thing: she wasn’t alone. Many of us try to project confidence, but deep down, we’re just trying to protect ourselves. What looks like boldness is sometimes really fear.
True confidence isn’t about the image we put out, the title we hold, or the possessions we cling to. Confidence that lasts—the kind that changes how we show up in the world—comes from the Lord.
Proverbs reminds us: “For the Lord shall be your confidence” (v.26). When our trust is rooted in Him, it changes everything. It gives us more than a tough exterior; it gives us wisdom, peace, and a steadiness that people can sense.
Here’s what confidence in God looks like:
✨ Wisdom – Verse 35 says the fool is self-confident, but those who lean on God preserve sound judgment and discernment. True wisdom flows from walking closely with Him.
✨ Peace – Worldly success means nothing if your spirit is restless. Proverbs promises, “When you lie down, you will not be afraid; when you lie down, your sleep will be sweet” (vv.24–25). Confidence in God brings rest.
✨ Goodness – “Do not withhold good from those to whom it is due” (v.27). When our confidence is in God, we’re free to extend kindness without hesitation.
✨ Love – Trusting God softens our hearts toward others: “Do not devise harm against your neighbor, who lives trustingly beside you” (v.29). Confidence in Him naturally grows into love for people.
✨ Intimacy with God – Verse 32 says the Lord takes the upright “into His confidence.” Isn’t that beautiful? When He is our confidence, we also get His closeness, His whisper, His counsel.
✨ Humility – God lifts up the humble and resists the proud (vv.33–35). Confidence in Him keeps us grounded, not puffed up.
When our confidence is anchored in Christ, it doesn’t make us arrogant—it makes us steady. It doesn’t push people away—it draws them in. And it doesn’t depend on what we own, how we look, or what we’ve achieved. It depends on Him.
Friend, if you’ve ever struggled with insecurity or found yourself putting up walls to seem strong, know this: God doesn’t just want you to “look confident.” He wants you to be confident—because you are secure in His love.
And when you live from that place? Your life will overflow with wisdom, peace, goodness, love, intimacy, and humility. That’s the kind of confidence that shines.
Reflection Question: Where have I been placing my confidence lately—in myself, my accomplishments, or the opinions of others? How can I shift that confidence back to God this week?
Now let’s worship just a little so we can feel the spirit of God. Confidence by Tasha Cobbs Leonard will help us with that.
Prayer: Lord help me to live the life of faith, walking close with you and putting my trust and confidence in you. Heavenly Father, thank You that my true confidence doesn’t come from titles, achievements, or what others think of me, but from You alone. Teach me to lean into Your wisdom, walk in Your peace, and reflect Your goodness and love in everything I do. Help me release pride, fear, or insecurity, and instead draw near to You in trust. Lord, let my confidence shine from a heart that belongs fully to You. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
