Praying Boldly: What to Do When You Want Something But Don’t Know How to Ask

📖 Knowledge to Ponder: Genesis 24:12-19

Have you ever wanted something so deeply that you could barely put it into words? You wanted to pray for it, but you weren’t sure how to even start. How do you ask God for something you want—not necessarily something you need?

Let’s be honest. We all have wants. Desires. Hopes. Dreams. And sometimes we feel unsure about how to take them to God. Is it selfish? Is it the right time? Does it even make sense to ask?

Today’s scripture in Genesis 24 is a perfect example of how we can pray for success and seek God’s guidance—without guilt. In these verses, Abraham’s servant prays a very specific prayer as he’s tasked with finding a wife for Isaac. This wasn’t a prayer for himself—it was a selfless, guided, and focused prayer. But even though the request wasn’t personal, it was still bold. He asked for a successful outcome. He asked for a sign. And most importantly, he trusted God to lead him.

Sometimes when we pray, we’re not really praying—we’re wishing. Hoping. Daydreaming. But prayer, especially when it comes to success, requires more than that. It calls for faith, clarity, and alignment with God’s will.

Because here’s the thing: not everything we want is always what’s best for us.
And sometimes God says “not yet” because the timing is off.
Sometimes He says “no” because He’s got something better.
And other times, the answer is “yes”—but only after we’ve aligned ourselves with His purpose.

Praying for success is like planting a garden. You put in the work. You water. You weed. You wait. You don’t always see what’s happening underground—but if the soil is right and the season is right, a harvest will come.

But faith means you keep working the soil even when you don’t see any sprouts.

If you’re praying for success—in your business, your relationships, your next step in life—here are a few things to keep in mind:

✨ 4 Keys to Praying for Success (The Right Way)

1. Know His Word.
You can’t pray the promises of God if you don’t know what they are.
Get into scripture. Speak His Word back to Him. His promises don’t return void—but you’ve got to know them to stand on them.

2. Be Spirit-Led, Not Flesh-Driven.
Success in God’s eyes isn’t about ego or selfish gain.
Ask the Holy Spirit to guide your heart as you pray. Let your motives be genuine and your heart be open to correction, redirection, and refinement.

3. Use Wisdom & Common Sense.
Not every shiny opportunity is from God.
Be specific in what you’re asking for so when the door opens, you’ll know if it’s the one He designed for you—or a distraction dressed up as a blessing.

4. Don’t Be Afraid to Ask for a Sign.
If you’re still growing in your faith and unsure how to hear from God, it’s okay to ask for a sign—just be clear. Don’t leave it up to vague feelings. Be intentional. Trust that God can speak to you in a way that you’ll understand.

Beloved, God wants you to live a successful life—one filled with purpose, grace, and joy. But He also wants you to seek Him in the process. He’s not holding back blessings to punish you. Sometimes He’s just protecting you until your heart, your faith, and your readiness all align with His perfect will.

So don’t stop praying. Don’t stop planting. Don’t stop showing up with faith and expectation. Just like a garden takes time and care, so does your journey.

And when that harvest comes? Oh, it will overflow in ways you never imagined. That’s what it means to walk in God’s favor. That’s what it means to trust Him—even when you’re unsure what to say.

Try it for yourself. 🌱

Prayer:  Lord, thank you for being a God that cares about me enough to love me and give me an avenue to come directly to you with my petitions.  Lord, I know you love me and you want me to have a great life, but you want me to have that life with you, not outside of you.  Lord help me to remain faithful and true to your will even when I come to you praying for needs and wants.  Help me to remember day in and day out that I’m your child and I have a responsibility to act accordingly.  I continue to look for your guidance and blessings in your son’s name. Amen.

Reflection Question: What is one area of your life where you’ve been working and waiting faithfully—yet haven’t seen a harvest—and how might you invite God more specifically into that process through prayer and discernment?
