Romans 9:1
“I speak the truth in Christ—I am not lying, my conscience confirms it through the Holy Spirit.”
So, I was thinking…
Lately, I’ve been reflecting on how my spiritual maturity has shifted and grown through the years — how each decade has brought its own lessons, challenges, and growth. I can see that I’ve matured, but if I’m being honest, there have also been seasons where it felt like I was taking two steps forward and one step back.
Have you ever felt that way? Like you are growing, but something’s still missing?
That was me — until I had a quiet aha moment with God. I realized it wasn’t that I wasn’t maturing… it was how I was measuring my maturity.
🌿 A Different Kind of Growth
I began to see that spiritual maturity isn’t about how long you’ve been a Christian or how much Scripture you can quote. It’s about how closely your daily decisions reflect God’s direction.
True maturity means you’ve walked with God long enough to know right from wrong — and you let your conscience, guided by the Holy Spirit, lead you toward what’s right.
But let’s be real — we don’t always get it right. Sometimes we make poor decisions and have to circle back in repentance. Thank God for His grace!
Still, I wondered — what if there was a way to grow proactively instead of reactively?
What if we learned to stay so tuned in to God’s voice that instead of asking for forgiveness afterward, we sought His direction beforehand?
That’s when everything shifted for me.
🔑 Tuning In to God’s Voice
I started practicing the habit of pausing before making decisions and simply asking,
“God, what would You have me do?”
Then, I’d sit quietly and wait. Not for a booming voice from heaven — but for that gentle, familiar nudge.
Sometimes His answer comes through Scripture. Sometimes through a thought that settles deep in your heart. Other times, it’s a person or situation He places in your path at just the right moment.
But the key is staying open and staying aware.
You’ll start to recognize His voice more easily when He’s already at the forefront of your mind throughout your day.
✨ “When God is the first place you turn, you won’t have to wonder where He’s leading.”
🛡️ Living “On Guard”
This shift in perspective has helped me see that spiritual maturity is also about being on guard — alert and intentional in how we live.
David understood this so well. In Psalm 18:23, he says:
“I have been blameless before Him and have kept myself from sin.”
Did you catch that? David took accountability for keeping himself from sin. He didn’t just ask God to shield him — he actively guarded his heart, his thoughts, and his actions.
To be “on guard” means being spiritually awake — watching for temptation, distraction, or complacency before it pulls you off track.
Other scriptures echo this same call:
- 1 Corinthians 16:13 – “Be on your guard; stand firm in the faith; be courageous; be strong.”
- Mark 13:33 – “Be on guard! Be alert! You do not know when that time will come.”
- Luke 21:34–36 – “Be always on the watch, and pray that you may be able to escape all that is about to happen.”
Even Jesus used the parable of the ten virgins to remind us what happens when we grow spiritually lazy or sleepy. Those who were unprepared missed out on the blessing that was waiting for them.
💭 A Proactive Faith
When we stay on guard and keep God at the center, we begin to live more proactively and less reactively.
We don’t abandon repentance — we just start needing it less often because we’re walking more closely in alignment with Him.
Repentance is not an “easy button.” It’s an awareness trigger — a holy reminder that we’re capable of more through Christ.
But the goal isn’t to sin and repent on repeat. The goal is to walk in step with God so that repentance becomes a deep moment of reflection, not a recurring cycle of reaction.
Because when we drift into that cycle, it dulls our spiritual sensitivity. We start slipping, losing awareness, and slowly pulling away from God — not because He left us, but because we stopped listening.
And that’s exactly what I don’t want for myself — or for you.
🌸 Walking Forward with God
God doesn’t just want to fix your problems; He wants to walk with you daily.
He’s not your emergency contact — He’s your constant companion.
So stay connected. Stay alert. Stay on guard.
Because when you walk in step with Him, your spiritual growth won’t just be visible — it’ll be transformational.
Ok let’s get going with our worship song for today. You know I am totally in love with Tasha Cobb Leonard but before her it was Yolanda Adams (she still my girl) so let’s worship today on a throwback from her “Open My Heart”. Such a classic, I still cry every time I hear it….
💬 Reflection Question
What area of your life has God been nudging you to be more “on guard” about lately?
🙏 Closing Prayer
Father, thank You for calling me to grow deeper and stronger in You.
Help me to be aware, alert, and in tune with Your voice.
Keep my heart soft, my ears open, and my steps aligned with Your will.
Teach me to walk not just in repentance, but in readiness.
In Jesus’ name, amen.
