🍂 The True Meaning of Thanksgiving

Thanksgiving has always been my favorite time of year. There’s just something about that day when people come together, set aside their differences, and share a meal filled with laughter, love, and grace. To me, it’s magical — a little glimpse of heaven on earth.

And I think the holiday is perfectly named. Thanksgiving.
A day to pause, breathe, and simply give thanks.

Now, don’t get me wrong — gratitude shouldn’t just happen one day a year. We’re called to live in a life of thanksgiving daily. But if we’re honest, life moves fast. We get busy, distracted, and sometimes, we need a day like Thanksgiving to stop and remember how blessed we really are. I am just saying…..

🕯 A Moment of Reflection

This year, I celebrated at my grand-niece’s house, and it was wonderful. She and her sister are two of my favorite nieces, and I was so grateful to be included in their gathering. I live alone, and I had no plans to cook a big meal, so it truly felt like a blessing.

But as I drove home that evening, full from good food and good company, I had this quiet thought:

“Lord, I’m so grateful… but do I really deserve all of this?”

That thought stayed with me. Because as I reflected on all my blessings, my heart turned toward those who didn’t have the same — people sleeping on the streets, families without food, or anyone spending the holiday in loneliness or loss.

And just like that, my gratitude shifted into conviction.

💭 When Gratitude Grows Deeper

October and November had been a whirlwind for me — filled with personal things, travel, and projects. Honestly, I hadn’t given one thought to how the holidays might affect others. I was just glad to have a few days to rest.

But a few days after Thanksgiving, something clicked.
My niece had mentioned that she and her husband don’t keep leftovers for long and that most of the food would probably end up being thrown away. At the time, I was too distracted to think about it — I had a bus to catch to Atlanta the next morning.

But later, while talking to my sister in Miami, it hit me.
I could have taken those leftovers and shared them with someone in need. That realization tugged at my spirit.

My sister and I decided that this Christmas, we’re going to cook extra — and intentionally deliver meals to those who might otherwise go without. That’s our assignment this season.

🧡 The Ultimate Thanksgiving

As I sat with that thought, I realized something simple yet profound:

True Thanksgiving isn’t just being grateful for what you have — it’s sharing what you have.

It’s one thing to say, “Thank You, Lord.”
It’s another to look around and say, “Lord, how can I bless someone else the way You’ve blessed me?”

That’s the heart of Thanksgiving — not just gratitude, but generosity.

Scripture reminds us of this again and again.
Psalm 95:2 says, “Let us come before Him with thanksgiving and extol Him with music and song.”
But it doesn’t stop there — it’s about living with a heart that gives thanks in all things, not just when life feels good.

And when we live that way, our gratitude becomes worship.

🌾 A Thanksgiving Challenge

This season, I challenge you (and myself) to practice active gratitude.
Don’t just say thank you — show it.
Bless someone who needs to see the love of Christ through your hands and your heart.

That’s where true thanksgiving begins.

Ok let’s show some thanksgiving worship.  This will help to put us in the spirit for more thanksgiving this season.  I so love this one.  The Goodness of God by Jenn Johnson and Bethel Music.
